Sydney Roosters turn green to help Centennial Parklands

25 February 2009

The Sydney Roosters teamed up with children from Paddington Public School and volunteersOn Thursday 19 February 2009, the Sydney Roosters teamed up with children from Paddington Public School and volunteers to help the Centennial Parklands Foundation plant and landscape the banks of Kensington Pond under a Federal Government grant.

The Foundation was awarded a grant of almost $50,000 from the Australian Government Water Fund through the Community Water Grants scheme. This funding, along with a $30,000 funding contribution from the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust, is being used to install filter socks at Kensington Pond which will trap tonnes of rubbish and sediment that currently flow from urban runoff into the Centennial Park ponds.

Volunteers from Paddington Public School with Brad FittlerThe Foundation is also keen to increase community awareness of stormwater pollution and its impacts on the Parklands and other urban wetlands through education and volunteer involvement.

Sarah Whyte, Chair of the Centennial Parklands Foundation, said, “The Foundation is delighted to have the support of the Sydney Roosters for this important environmental project. We hope that by raising awareness of how the community can help us, we will soon see a healthier pond system flourishing with flora and fauna.”

Community Water Grants encourage better water use and improvements in water quality through practical on-the-ground projects, such as reducing pollutants reaching our waterways, and water recycling and efficiency initiatives.

Brad Fittler and a young fan at the planting daySteve Corbett, Director and Chief Executive said, “The Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust greatly appreciates the work of the Foundation in obtaining a grant valued at almost $50,000 from the Australian Government Water Fund. This grant funding is providing invaluable assistance to the Trust to undertake these vital works.”

To deliver this project the Foundation recognises and appreciates the skills, time and resources of a number of educational and community organisations, including environmental trainees from Green Corps and the Windgap Foundation, students from Paddington Primary School, Parklands’ volunteers, the Sydney Roosters National Rugby League Team playing and coaching staff, and Trust Horticulturists and Rangers.
